One Step Into the World Cup

Yesterday night, USMNT crushed Panama 5-1. Christian Pulisic led the team with a hat-trick (first of his USMNT career) accompanied by goals from Jesus Ferrerira and Paul Arriola. After the match ended, the US team celebrated with a banner stating that they had qualified.

Not so fast. A loss against Costa Rica on Wednesday will prevent the team from securing one of the coveted spots in Qatar. Additionally, Costa Rica will have to win by six goals to climb ahead of the US team. Head coach, Gregg Berhalter, immediately commented on the mistake stating that "[the team] knows we're not there yet, despite what that banner said".

As stated in previous articles, the question remains: will leaders emerge or will heartbreak consume? Injuries to Weston Mckennis and Sergino Dest place heavy pressure on the likes of Chistian Pulisic. We will see Wednesday if the Pennsylvania native can secure his country a spot in Qatar.

Here are how the standings look as we reach the close (as of the night of 27/3/2022):

  1. It is great was great to see Pulisic score his first hattrick for the US men's team, and for the US mens team to very proceed to the World cup as I believe it is very unlikely that the Costa Rica team will even able to beat the U.S team, especially with the recent form that Pulisic has shown.

  2. As the match looms ahead on Thursday, and after reading this article, it seems to me there won’t be a repeat disappointment. Unlike the most recent WCQ disappointment, Italy loosing the N. Macedonia, the USA has plenty of room for error in these last games. This seemingly inevitable qualification sets up the most talented roster in USMNT history for a World Cup appearance, and potentially a deep run.
